Why a scorecard

Why we don’t publish a ranking of other firms

Lists are rarely neutral

Many “top 10” lists are written by a firm, an academy or a marketplace, or are paid placements.

“Best” depends on your home

The right designer for a compact 2BHK on a fixed budget is not the right one for a large villa.

Proof beats reputation

A 3D design, an itemised quotation and named materials tell you more than any badge.

The 10 checkpoints

The top 10 things to check in any interior designer

Jump to a checkpoint, or read them in order. Each one has the question to ask and how ModScale answers it.

1

Full homes like yours in the portfolio

Weight Essential

Single hero photos say little. Ask for complete homes of a similar size and budget, room by room, and whether each image is a 3D design or a photograph of a finished home.

AskCan I see a full project like mine, every room?
ModScale: Full-home designs in our portfolio, each labelled as a 3D design prepared for the client.
2

Your rooms in 3D before production

Weight Essential

A good designer draws your actual rooms on your floor plan and revises them with you. Production should start only after you sign off.

AskWill I approve a 3D design of my rooms before anything is made?
ModScale: Yes. Every home is designed in 3D and revised with you before production.
3

An itemised quotation

Weight Essential

Each item with dimensions, board, finish and hardware listed, plus clear exclusions. A per-sq-ft figure on its own hides what is included.

AskCan you send an itemised quote with exclusions listed?
ModScale: Itemised quotation for every room. See how to compare quotations.
4

BWP plywood where water reaches

Weight Essential

Bangalore kitchens and bathrooms see water and monsoon humidity. Boiling-water-proof (BWP) board resists swelling far better than commercial or MR grades.

AskWhich plywood grade is in the kitchen and wardrobes?
ModScale: BWP plywood for kitchens and wardrobes. See plywood grades explained.
5

Named hardware and finish brands

Weight Important

Hinges, channels and laminates decide how the home feels in five years. The brand and series should be in writing.

AskWhich hinge, channel and laminate brands are included?
ModScale: Brands listed line by line in the quotation. See Hettich vs Häfele vs Ebco.
6

Who actually builds the furniture

Weight Important

Factory-made modular, carpenter-made on site, or a mix: each is fine if you know which, and who supervises it.

AskIs the joinery made in your own setup or outsourced?
ModScale: Joinery made in our own production setup from approved drawings. See modular vs carpenter-made.
7

One team, one point of contact

Weight Important

Handoffs between a sales team, a designer and a contractor are where details get lost.

AskWho is my contact from design to handover?
ModScale: One team from floor plan to handover, from our HSR Layout studio.
8

Payments tied to milestones

Weight Important

Payments should follow design sign-off, production and installation, not a large advance before any design is shown.

AskWhat is the stage-wise payment schedule?
ModScale: Stage-wise schedule. See interior payment schedules.
9

A written timeline

Weight Good to have

Ask for a schedule with production and installation dates, and how association rules and working hours are handled.

AskWhen does production start and when do you hand over?
ModScale: Timeline shared after design sign-off. See project timelines.
10

Warranty and after-sales in writing

Weight Good to have

Get the warranty for woodwork and hardware in writing, and ask how quickly issues are attended to after handover.

AskWhat is covered after handover, and for how long?
ModScale: Warranty terms in writing. See warranty questions to ask.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Who are the top 10 interior designers in Bangalore?

Any top-10 list depends on who wrote it, and many lists are written or paid for by the firms in them. A fairer way is to score every designer on your shortlist against the same 10 checkpoints on this page and keep the ones that score highest for your home.

How do I compare interior designers in Bangalore?

Use the same criteria for each: full projects like yours, a 3D design before production, an itemised quotation, BWP plywood in wet areas, named hardware, who builds the furniture, one point of contact, milestone payments, a written timeline and a written warranty.

Is a big interior brand better than a local studio?

Not by default. Larger brands offer standard packages; smaller studios often give more customisation and personal attention. Score both on the same checkpoints.

How many designers should I shortlist?

Three is usually enough to compare quotations and designs properly without losing weeks in meetings.

How much do interior designers in Bangalore charge?

For a typical 2BHK, our cost calculator shows about ₹4.4–6 lakh for essential finishes, ₹6–8.3 lakh mid-range and ₹8.3–12.3 lakh premium for kitchen, wardrobes, units and false ceiling, before GST. Painting and electricals are extra.

Can ModScale be on my shortlist?

Yes. Share your floor plan and we will come back with a 3D design discussion and an itemised quotation you can score against this list.
