How you pay for interiors matters as much as how much you pay. A good payment schedule ties each payment to work you can see, so you are never far ahead of what has been delivered. This guide explains how milestone-based schedules work and what to check before you sign.
Milestone-based payments
At ModScale, payment is staged against project milestones. You are never paying for something that has not been drawn, and nothing goes to production before you have approved it in 3D. The stages follow our process:
- Design: initial discussion, site visit, design discussion and 3D model.
- Approval: you approve the final design and the written specification.
- Production: joinery is made in our production setup.
- Installation: units are installed on site.
- Handover: snagging is closed and the home is handed over.
The exact split is set out in your agreement. See our process and turnkey interiors.
What to check in any payment schedule
- Each payment is linked to a clear, visible milestone.
- Production does not start before you approve the design and specification.
- The specification names board, finish and hardware brands.
- Exclusions are listed: civil work, appliances, loose furniture, GST.
- The final payment is tied to handover and snagging, not to installation alone.
- Warranty and after-sales terms are in writing. See warranty and after-sales questions.
Red flags
- A large payment before any design is shown.
- Vague line items such as “woodwork, lump sum”.
- Pressure to pay for materials before the design is final.

Frequently asked
How are interior design payments usually made?
In stages tied to milestones such as design approval, production, installation and handover, as set out in your agreement.
Should I pay the full amount before installation?
No. Keep a final payment linked to handover and snagging, so any issues are closed before you pay in full.
