A kitchen window brings in daylight and fresh air, lets smoke out and makes the hours spent cooking more pleasant. In Indian kitchens with heavy cooking, the window also has to work with the chimney, the sink and grills for security. Here are kitchen window design ideas that work.

Window types

  • Sliding windows: common in apartments; they do not open into the room or over the counter.
  • Casement windows: open fully for better ventilation, but check they do not hit the tap or wall units.
  • Top-hung or ventilator windows: a small upper section for constant airflow, useful above the hob side.
  • UPVC or aluminium frames: both handle kitchen humidity; UPVC seals better against dust and noise.

Designing around the window

Counter under the window

A counter run under the window gives the best working light. Keep the tap low enough, or use a pull-down tap, so the window can open.

Sink under the window

The classic layout: daylight while washing vessels and a view out. Check the window sill height clears the tap and splashback.

Shelves or open niches around the window

Short open shelves on either side frame the window and hold herbs, jars and cookbooks.

No wall units in front of the window

Keep upper cabinets off the window; use the wall on either side or add a tall unit instead.

Grills, mesh and blinds

  • A neat MS or aluminium grill on the outside for security, without blocking the opening.
  • Insect mesh, preferably on a sliding or pleated frame, so the window can stay open.
  • Roller or aluminium Venetian blinds, which are easier to wipe than fabric curtains in a kitchen.

Ventilation

A window is not a substitute for a chimney; you need both. Place the chimney’s duct through an outer wall, and if the window is near the hob, avoid curtains that can catch fire. See kitchen chimney and hob buying guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should the kitchen sink be under the window?

It is a popular layout because it gives daylight and a view while washing. Make sure the tap does not block the window from opening.

Which window is best for a kitchen?

Sliding windows suit most apartments; casement windows ventilate better if they do not clash with the tap or wall units. UPVC frames seal well against dust.

Can wall cabinets go over a kitchen window?

It is better to keep upper cabinets off the window and use the walls on either side, so light and air are not blocked.

Is a kitchen window enough without a chimney?

No. Indian cooking produces oil and smoke that need a chimney with an outside duct, even if the kitchen has a window.

What covering is best for a kitchen window?

Roller or aluminium Venetian blinds are easy to clean. Avoid fabric curtains near the hob.
