The living room carries the first impression of a home. In a luxury interior it should feel generous and calm, work for both everyday family life and entertaining, and show care in its details rather than in the number of things in it.

1. Make the TV wall a piece of design
In most Indian homes the TV wall is the focal point, so treat it as one. Panelling, fluting, stone-finish cladding or a slatted wood wall, with concealed cabling and storage below, turns it into architecture rather than a screen on a wall.
2. Plan lighting in layers
Cove lighting for an even glow, spotlights on art and texture, a statement pendant or chandelier, and lamps for evenings. Keep one warm colour temperature throughout. See our lighting design guide.
3. Use natural textures
Wood, stone, linen, bouclé and leather make a room feel rich without adding colour. Two or three textures, repeated, are more effective than many.

4. Choose restraint
Fewer, larger pieces of furniture and a limited palette make a room feel expensive. A Japandi or minimal luxury approach, with light wood, soft neutrals and very few objects, can be as luxurious as a richer classic style.
5. Bring in Indian craft carefully
A carved jaali screen, cane, brass or handloom fabric gives a living room character and a sense of place. One strong element is enough; the rest of the room should support it.

6. Define the dining area
In open living-dining spaces, a pendant over the table, a change in ceiling or a crockery unit with lit display defines the dining zone without walls.
7. Make furniture for the room
Custom sofas, consoles and units sized to your walls are one of the clearest differences between a premium and a luxury living room. Compare the two in premium vs luxury interiors.
