Most disappointing luxury interiors are not the result of a small budget. They come from a handful of avoidable mistakes made early in the project. Here are the ones we see most often, and how to avoid them.

1. Changing the design after it is frozen

This is the single biggest cause of delay and extra cost. A wardrobe moved after its panels are cut is not an edit; it is a re-manufacture. Use the design and iteration stages to make every decision, then freeze. See how long home interiors take.

2. Treating lighting as an afterthought

Expensive materials look flat under poor light. Plan ambient, task and accent lighting with the design, in one warm colour temperature. Read our lighting guide.

3. Too many feature finishes

Marble, fluting, panelling, wallpaper and metal all on the same wall compete with each other. One or two feature surfaces per space look more expensive than six.

4. Spending on what shows and saving on what does not

Beautiful shutters on poor boards and cheap hardware will sag, swell or stick within a few years, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Specify the carcass and hardware properly. See plywood grades explained.

5. Ordering long-lead items late

Decorative lights, specific stone slabs and imported hardware can take four to eight weeks. Decide them at design stage, or they will hold up the whole project.

6. Copying a look instead of designing for your life

A layout from a photo rarely fits your family, your storage or your floor plan. Start from how you live, then choose the style.

7. Choosing finishes without seeing them

Colours and textures change under real light. Always see samples side by side before deciding; compare PU, acrylic and laminate, and visit our studio to see materials in person.

8. Splitting design and execution

When the designer and the contractor are different people, details fall through the gap. A turnkey approach keeps one team responsible. Read how to choose a luxury interior designer.
