Bathroom ceilings in apartments usually hide the plumbing of the flat above, the geyser lines and the exhaust duct. They face steam every day, so ordinary materials sag, peel or grow mould. A good bathroom ceiling design uses moisture-safe materials and leaves access for repairs. Here is what to choose.

Materials for bathroom ceilings

  • Moisture-resistant gypsum board: a smooth painted finish like the rest of the home; use anti-fungal, washable paint.
  • PVC panels: fully waterproof and inexpensive; panel joints are visible. See PVC ceiling design.
  • Aluminium or metal panels: clip-in tiles or linear strips; very durable and easy to remove for access.
  • Avoid: standard gypsum, POP and untreated wood in bathrooms.

Practical details

  • Leave a removable access panel below plumbing joints and traps, so leaks can be fixed without breaking the ceiling.
  • Fix the exhaust fan duct to an outer wall and seal it.
  • Use lights rated for wet areas (IP44 or higher near the shower).
  • Check and fix any seepage from above before closing the ceiling.
  • Keep the ceiling high enough over the shower for comfortable use.

Frequently asked questions

Which false ceiling is best for a bathroom?

Moisture-resistant gypsum, PVC panels or aluminium panels. Avoid standard gypsum, POP and untreated wood.

Why do bathroom ceilings need an access panel?

The plumbing of the flat above often runs through the bathroom ceiling. A removable panel lets plumbers fix leaks without breaking the ceiling.

Which lights are safe in a bathroom ceiling?

Lights rated for wet areas, typically IP44 or higher near the shower.

How do I stop mould on a bathroom ceiling?

Use moisture-resistant materials and anti-fungal paint, run an exhaust fan, and fix any seepage from above.

Is a PVC ceiling good for a bathroom?

Yes. It is waterproof and easy to clean, though the panel joints are visible.
