Most doors in Indian homes are 7 ft (about 2,100 mm) high. Typical widths are 3.5 ft for the main door, 3 ft for bedrooms, 2.5 ft for the kitchen and 2.25 to 2.5 ft for bathrooms. Flush door shutters are usually 30 to 35 mm thick.
In this guide
Door sizes in Indian homes follow a few common standards, which is why ready-made flush doors and frames fit most openings. They are not identical everywhere, though: builders vary, and older homes often have shorter or narrower doors. Use the figures below to plan, and measure the actual opening before ordering a shutter.
Standard door sizes for each room
| Door | Width × height (feet) | Approx. mm |
|---|---|---|
| Main entrance door | 3.5 × 7 ft | 1,067 × 2,134 mm |
| Bedroom door | 3 × 7 ft | 914 × 2,134 mm |
| Kitchen door | 2.5 × 7 ft | 762 × 2,134 mm |
| Bathroom or toilet door | 2.25 to 2.5 × 7 ft | 686 to 762 × 2,134 mm |
| Balcony or utility door | about 2.75 × 7 ft | 838 × 2,134 mm |
| Pooja room door | about 2.5 × 6.5 ft | 762 × 1,981 mm |
Sizes from HouseYog’s standard door and window schedule for Indian homes (updated September 2026). Apartments in Bangalore often use about 2.5 ft wide bathroom doors.
Main door size
The main door is the widest and heaviest door in the home, usually 3.5 ft wide and 7 ft high, sometimes 4 ft or more in villas or with a double shutter. Many apartments add a separate safety door in front. If you are choosing a new design, see our main door design ideas.
Bedroom door size
A 3 ft wide, 7 ft high door is the common bedroom size. It lets a mattress or a wardrobe panel through and leaves room for a comfortable swing. Check the swing against the wardrobe and bed before deciding where the hinges go; see bedroom door design.

Bathroom door size
Bathroom doors are narrower, usually 2.25 to 2.5 ft wide and 7 ft high, because the room is small and the door must not hit the basin or WC. They also face constant moisture, so the material matters more than the size: WPC, PVC or aluminium-framed doors cope with water far better than ordinary flush doors. Our bathroom door design guide compares the options.
Kitchen, balcony and pooja doors
- Kitchen: about 2.5 ft wide, though many apartments now have an open kitchen or a wider opening with a glass partition.
- Balcony and utility: about 2.75 ft for a single shutter, or wider sliding doors where the opening allows; see types of sliding doors.
- Pooja room: often a little lower, about 6.5 ft, with a carved or jaali shutter; see pooja room door design.
Frame and shutter thickness
| Part | Typical size |
|---|---|
| Door frame width | about 4.5 in (114 mm) |
| Door frame thickness | about 2.5 to 3 in |
| Flush door shutter | 30 to 35 mm thick |
| Solid wood shutter | 40 to 45 mm thick |
The opening in the wall is larger than the shutter: it includes the frame on both sides and at the top. When you measure, note the clear opening inside the frame as well as the outer size of the frame.
Before you order a door
- Measure each opening at the top, middle and bottom; walls are rarely perfectly square.
- Decide the swing direction against furniture, switches and wardrobes.
- Allow for the floor finish if you are changing tiles, so the door clears the new floor.
- Match hardware to the shutter weight, especially for main doors.
