The bed is the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom and the one you use most. Its design sets the style of the room, and its size and storage decide how much floor space is left. Here are bed design ideas that suit Indian bedrooms, from compact apartments to large villa master suites.

Popular bed designs

Upholstered bed

A padded fabric or leatherette headboard, often with channel or button tufting, is comfortable to lean against and softens the room. Choose stain-resistant fabric and keep it out of direct sun.

Wooden bed with a panelled headboard

Veneer or laminate in wood tones, with grooves or slats, suits contemporary, Japandi and warm-minimal homes. It is easy to maintain.

Platform or low bed

A low bed on a recessed base looks modern and makes the ceiling feel higher. Leave enough height under it for cleaning.

Bed with storage

Hydraulic lift-up storage or drawers under the bed hold quilts, suitcases and off-season clothes, which is invaluable in apartments. See bed design with storage.

Wall-integrated headboard

Instead of a separate headboard, the whole wall behind the bed is panelled, with side tables and lights built in. See bed back wall design.

Kids’ beds

Bunk beds, trundle beds and beds with steps that double as storage make the most of a children’s room. See kids’ room interior design.

Bed sizes in India

  • Single: about 3 x 6.25 feet.
  • Queen: about 5 x 6.5 feet, the most common choice for apartment bedrooms.
  • King: about 6 x 6.5 feet, for master bedrooms with space to walk around.

Mattress sizes vary by brand, so buy or measure the mattress before the bed frame is made. Leave at least about 2 feet of walking space on the sides you use.

Materials

Use BWP or good-grade plywood for the base and storage boxes, with laminate or veneer finishes, and solid supports at regular intervals so the mattress does not sag. For hydraulic beds, choose good-quality pistons rated for the mattress weight.

Plan the bed with the rest of the room: see master bedroom design and bedroom wall design.

Frequently asked questions

Which bed size is best for an apartment bedroom?

A queen bed of about 5 x 6.5 feet suits most apartment bedrooms. Choose a king only if you will still have about 2 feet of walking space around it.

Is a storage bed worth it?

Yes, in most apartments. Hydraulic or drawer storage under the bed holds quilts, suitcases and seasonal clothes that would otherwise need a separate cupboard.

Which is better, an upholstered or wooden bed?

Upholstered beds are softer and more comfortable to lean on; wooden beds are easier to clean and maintain. Many homes combine an upholstered headboard with a wooden base.

What material should a bed frame be made of?

BWP or good-grade plywood with laminate or veneer finish is durable and suits Bangalore humidity, with solid supports under the mattress.

How high should a bed be?

Most beds are about 15 to 18 inches high to the top of the base, so the mattress top sits at a comfortable sitting height.
