PVC vs gypsum false ceiling: cost, durability and where each works

Gypsum gives the seamless, painted ceiling most living rooms and bedrooms want. PVC shrugs off water and needs no painting. Here is how they compare on cost, finish and life, and which one to use in each room.

Quick answer

Choose gypsum for living rooms and bedrooms: it gives a smooth, jointless, painted finish and suits cove lighting. Choose PVC for bathrooms, utility areas and balconies, where moisture would damage gypsum. Published 2026 figures put gypsum at about ₹80 to ₹150 per sq ft and PVC at about ₹70 to ₹160 per sq ft, depending on brand and design.

Both materials hang from a metal frame below the slab, both hide wiring and both take lights. The difference is in the finish, how they handle water and how they look up close. Most homes end up using both: gypsum in the dry rooms and PVC or moisture-resistant boards in the wet ones.

Where gypsum is the better choice

Living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas are dry, and they are where people look up. Gypsum’s seamless finish, crisp edges and easy cove pockets make it the default here. It can be painted to match the walls, cut for spotlights anywhere, and repainted years later. If a room sits under a bathroom or terrace that might leak, use moisture-resistant gypsum board and fix the leak first.

Where PVC is the better choice

Bathrooms, utility areas, balconies and covered sit-outs see steam, splashes and sometimes leaks from the floor above. PVC panels are waterproof, light, quick to fit and easy to wipe clean, and individual panels can be removed to reach plumbing. They are also a sensible choice in rental homes where a quick, low-maintenance finish matters more than a seamless look. See PVC ceiling designs.

Can you combine PVC and gypsum?

Yes. A common approach is a gypsum ceiling through the living, dining and bedrooms and PVC in bathrooms and the utility area. Some designs also use a PVC or wooden-look strip as a feature inside a gypsum ceiling. Keep the finishes consistent within a room so the joins do not look like an afterthought.

Durability and maintenance

  • Gypsum: long-lasting in dry rooms; cracks at joints usually come from poor taping or a weak frame, not the board itself. A leak above will stain and soften it.
  • PVC: unaffected by water; can yellow or sag slightly over time with heat from nearby lights or in very hot spots, so leave space around light fittings.
  • Both: a good galvanised frame fixed properly to the slab matters more than the board for a ceiling that stays flat.

Which should you choose?

For a typical Bangalore apartment: gypsum in the living room, dining and bedrooms; PVC or moisture-resistant board in bathrooms and the utility; and a plain or no ceiling in the kitchen unless you need to hide ducts. Frequently asked questions

Which is better, PVC or gypsum ceiling?

Gypsum is better for living rooms and bedrooms because of its smooth, painted finish. PVC is better for bathrooms, utility areas and balconies because it is waterproof.

Is PVC ceiling cheaper than gypsum?

They overlap. Published 2026 figures put PVC at about ₹70 to ₹160 per sq ft and gypsum at about ₹80 to ₹150 per sq ft; the design and lighting change the final cost more than the material.

Is a PVC ceiling good for a bedroom?

It works, but most people prefer gypsum in bedrooms for its seamless finish and easy cove lighting. PVC suits rooms with moisture.

Can gypsum ceiling be used in a bathroom?

Only moisture-resistant gypsum board, with good ventilation. PVC or grid ceilings with access panels are usually more practical.

How long does a PVC ceiling last?

Many years in normal conditions; keep it away from heat sources such as unventilated light fittings.
