Common Indian mattress sizes are single 36 × 72 to 78 in, double 48 × 72 to 78 in, queen 60 × 72 to 78 in and king 72 × 72 to 78 in. The bed frame adds about 2 to 4 inches on each side. A queen bed suits a bedroom of about 10 × 10 ft; a king bed is comfortable in about 12 × 12 ft or more.
In this guide
Bed sizes in India follow mattress sizes, and mattress makers here sell each width in three common lengths: 72, 75 and 78 inches. Taller family members are better served by the 78-inch length. Below are the standard sizes, then what they mean for your room.
Standard bed and mattress sizes in India
| Bed | Mattress (inches) | In feet | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 36 × 72, 75 or 78 | 3 × 6 to 6.5 ft | One child or adult |
| Double | 48 × 72, 75 or 78 | 4 × 6 to 6.5 ft | One adult with space, or a guest room |
| Queen | 60 × 72, 75 or 78 | 5 × 6 to 6.5 ft | Most couples; standard for master bedrooms in apartments |
| King | 72 × 72, 75 or 78 | 6 × 6 to 6.5 ft | Couples who want more room, or a child who joins at night |
Sizes are the common Indian mattress sizes; some brands also sell custom widths. The bed frame is larger than the mattress, typically by 2 to 4 inches on each side and more with a deep headboard.
Bed frame and headboard size
- Frame: add about 4 to 8 inches to the mattress width and length for the frame.
- Headboard: a padded or panelled headboard adds 3 to 6 inches at the head end; a full-wall back panel adds its own depth. See bed headboard designs.
- Side tables: plan 18 to 24 inches for each.
How high should a bed be?
A comfortable height to the top of the mattress is about 18 to 24 inches from the floor, so you can sit with feet flat. Storage beds with hydraulic lift-up bases sit at the higher end and are useful in apartments; see bed designs with storage.

Which bed fits your room?
Keep about 2 ft of walkway on the sides you use, and about 2.5 to 3 ft in front of a hinged wardrobe so the shutters open. With that in mind:
| Room size | Bed that fits comfortably |
|---|---|
| About 9 × 10 ft | Double or queen, against one wall, with sliding wardrobe shutters |
| About 10 × 11 ft | Queen with side tables and a hinged wardrobe |
| About 12 × 12 ft or larger | King with side tables, wardrobe and a dresser or study |
Mark the bed and the wardrobe on the floor with masking tape before you buy. It quickly shows whether a king bed leaves room to open the wardrobe.
Children’s rooms and guest rooms
A single bed, a bunk bed or a pull-out trundle frees floor space for study and play in children’s rooms; see bunk bed designs. A double or queen bed with storage works well in a guest room that doubles as a study.
Plan the bed with the room
The bed decides where the wardrobe, side tables, AC and lights go, so we plan it first in the 3D design. See master bedroom design and our standard wardrobe size guide.
