Many Bangalore apartments come with a bay window, a ledge that projects out from the wall, typically at sitting or table height. Left bare it becomes a dumping ground. Designed well, it turns into the best seat in the house: a reading nook, a study desk, extra storage or a place for plants. Here are the bay window design ideas that work in Indian apartments, with practical points on comfort, heat and rain.

Measure first
Note the ledge height from the floor, its depth and width, and whether it is concrete or granite on top. A comfortable seat is around 400 to 450 mm high and at least 450 mm deep. Many ledges are higher or shallower than that, so the design often builds the seat up or out with a plywood platform and cushion.
Bay window design ideas
Window seat with storage
A platform with a thick cushion on top and drawers or lift-up lids below. The most popular choice: it adds seating and stores blankets, toys or files. Drawers are easier to use than lift-up tops once cushions are on.
Reading nook
Add a wall-mounted reading light on each side, a few back cushions and a slim bookshelf at one end. Keep the switch within reach of the seat.
Study or work desk
If the ledge is at table height, extend it into a desk with a chair tucked beneath and shelves on the side walls. Natural light from the side is better for screens than light from behind. More ideas in study table design for small rooms and home office design.
Daybed in a kids’ room
A deep, well-padded seat can double as a spare bed for sleepovers. Add rounded edges and a fixed safety grille on the window; see child-safe interiors.
Plant ledge
In a sunny bay, keep it simple: a waterproof top, a few planters and a drip tray. Make sure water cannot seep into the woodwork.
Tea corner
A low table and floor cushions turn a living room bay into a place for morning tea, without taking floor space from the room.
Cushions and fabrics
Use firm foam at least 75 to 100 mm thick, with removable, washable covers. Choose fade-resistant fabric for a sunny window and add a couple of back cushions against the side walls.
Curtains and blinds
Blinds fitted inside the bay keep the seat usable and look neat. Curtains on a track outside the bay can close it off at night. Our guide to curtains vs blinds compares the options.
Heat and rain
- West-facing bays get hot in the afternoon; use solar-control film or a light-filtering blind.
- Check window seals before the monsoon; damp ledges damage woodwork. See monsoon care for wooden furniture.
- Build the seat in BWP plywood with a laminate finish, and leave a small gap from the window frame.
Frequently asked questions
Build a platform to a comfortable seat height of around 400 to 450 mm with storage below, add a firm cushion with a washable cover, and fit lights and blinds so it is usable day and night.
Yes, if the ledge is near table height. Extend it into a desk, add side shelves and a task light, and keep the chair tucked under when not in use.
BWP plywood with a laminate finish handles sun and occasional moisture well. Leave a small gap from the window frame and seal the window before the monsoon.
Blinds fitted inside the bay keep the seat usable and look tidy; curtains outside the bay can close it off fully at night.
