When you start on your home interiors you will meet three kinds of people: interior designers who draw, contractors and carpenters who build, and turnkey studios that do both. Each can be the right choice. This guide explains who does what and the trade-offs, so you can pick the model that suits your home, time and appetite for managing work.

Who does what
- Interior designer (design-only): plans the layout, materials and look, and gives you drawings. You hire and manage the people who build it.
- Contractor or carpenter: builds what you or your designer specify. Design input varies a lot.
- Turnkey studio: designs, produces and installs, and manages the trades in between under one agreement. See turnkey interior design.
The trade-offs
Cost
Hiring a contractor directly can look cheaper on paper. The cost often moves into your time, into gaps between trades and into rework when drawings and site do not match.
Time and coordination
With separate designer and contractor, you coordinate the electrician, ceiling, carpentry and painting yourself. With a turnkey studio, one programme sequences them.
Quality and accountability
When one party designs and another builds, problems can fall between them. With one party responsible for both, there is one place to go when something is wrong.
Control
Design-only gives you the most control over who builds and what you pay each trade, if you have the time to manage it.
How to choose
- Small, simple jobs, such as one wardrobe: a good carpenter or modular carpentry team may be enough.
- Full homes where you have little time: a turnkey studio.
- Strong opinions and time to manage: a designer plus your own contractors.
