BWP and marine plywood are often used as if they mean the same thing, and in Indian interior work they overlap heavily. They are not quite identical, though, and knowing the difference helps you read a quotation and check what arrives on site.

A dark luxe bedroom wardrobe. Concept visual for illustration, not a photograph of a completed ModScale home.

The short answer

BWP stands for Boiling Water Proof, a description of the bonding. Marine plywood in India is plywood made to the IS 710 standard: BWP-bonded, with better veneers and a denser core with fewer internal gaps. So marine plywood is BWP, but not every board described as BWP is made to the marine standard. Some boards are sold as BWP under IS 303, the general plywood standard that also covers MR and BWR grades.

How they differ

  • Standard: marine plywood is made to IS 710; general BWP and BWR boards are made to IS 303.
  • Core quality: marine grade calls for better veneers and fewer gaps, which helps with screw holding and long-term stability.
  • Price: marine grade usually costs more than a general BWP or BWR board.

Where to use it

Wet and humid zones need the best water resistance: kitchen base units, the sink cabinet, utility areas and bathroom vanities. Wardrobes and living room units face humidity rather than water, but Bangalore’s monsoon is a good reason not to cut corners. ModScale builds cabinetry in BWP plywood, and we write the brand and grade into your quotation.

How to check the sheet

  • Look for the stamp on the sheet itself, not only on the invoice: the IS number (IS 710 for marine, IS 303 for general grades), the grade and the manufacturer.
  • Check the brand and grade match your quotation.
  • Ask to see the sheets before production starts.
